On Another Normal Day
Eun Tak sat at the corner of a cafĂ© waiting for the Goblin to come. She was thinking about the ghost she had seen in Canada. After she had gotten her memory back, Eun Tak had noticed that the handsome ghost she had met was the same one she had met 10 years ago. Eun Tak hadn’t seen many ghosts after the mark had faded from her neck, and after the Goblin had gone back to nothing, she had not seen a single one. Why could she see them again? Eun Tak drummed her fingers lightly on the table.
“What are you thinking about?”
The Goblin sat down next to her with two cups of coffee. Eun Tak had been thinking so hard that she hadn’t even noticed him coming. She told him that she had been thinking about Canada, when the Goblin frowned in an upset way.
“Oh. I thought you were thinking about me.”
Eun Tak rolled her eyes.
“Whenever I think about Canada, you are always in it. Didn’t you say that you’ve been to Canada 4 times with your first love? You fed her beef, and you said that she was still pretty. Am I not your first love? That’s what I was thinking about.”
As Eun Tak talked to him about it, the more she wanted to know about his first love. The Goblin smiled at her genuinely curious face.
“But that’s even more strange,” Eun Tak added. “Then who was the first love you met during Cheol Jong’s reign at the 12th year of Cheol Jong’s reign, in the Joseon Dynasty?”
“You.”
Eun Tak snorted. “Lies.”
Even he thought it was a lie. This weird fate of love. Before he had even met her, before he had even known about her, the Goblin had seen her. Her future. Eun Tak’s eyes widened at the Goblin’s explanation.
“You’re lying, aren’t you?”
“It really does seem like a lie, because all my first loves were you.”
The Goblin’s low voice confessed his love again.
They came out of the café and walked down the street. The street they walked down together was a familiar one. The old bookshops.
“That’s so cool. I can’t believe I actually am all your first loves… Last time when the first snow came and I summoned you, were you the warrior Shin Kim?”
“Yes.”
“Oh. I’ve always wondered how you looked before my time.”
The Goblin had looked very different from how he was now. He only wanted to show her his ‘cool’ sides, but that had been a day where his heart had won his head.
“Did I look strange?”
“No, you looked awesome. Goryeo man.”
Eun Tak smiled.
“That’s why I’m saying this.”
She creased her eyebrows at the weird way the conversation was going.
“I’m saying this because today is a normal day.”
Eun Tak froze.
“I’m saying this because you’re still shining brightly.”
She just listened.
“I’m saying this because all my first loves were you.”
Eun Tak bit her bottom lip with a curious face. It was the words he had been planning to say for a while. The words he had always wanted to say.
“On another normal day, will you be this Goryeo man’s bride?”
There was a pause as she tried to understand what it meant. There wasn’t a single lie in the words he had said just now, and there wasn’t a single reason why she would refuse him.
“I will. I will be this lonely man’s bride. I will be this great man’s first and last bride. I will.”
He had offered her his hand, and she had accepted it with two eyes full of tears. They looked at each other and held onto each other. Another beautiful memory had formed between the two.
The beach welcomed her back with a peaceful wave. The sky was blue and clear. It was a beautiful day. Eun Tak looked up towards the clouds and waved.
“I’m getting married, mom.”
The tears she had spilt all those years at the beach had paid off. For the first time in a long time, the ocean saw the smile on Eun Tak’s face.
“I’ll live well.”
The whole world could see her smile.
“I promise.”
