Sunny
Sunny went back inside the shop saying it was cold, but the grim reaper stood in shock outside. He couldn’t believe that the two people that had made him cry at first sight were the same people. What did he have to do with Shin’s story?
After all the customers left, the four were facing each other again at the table the Goblin was sitting at. The Goblin stared at Sunny; her real name was Sun Kim. But that was his sister’s name.
Sunny noticed his gaze and put down her glass of beer, annoyed.
“Excuse me, brother. Why do you keep staring at me like that?”
“Because someone I know has the same name as you. Is your real name Sun Kim? What Chinese characters do you use?”
“I don’t use Chinese characters, I use English. S. U. N. N. Y.”
Sunny’s annoyed voice didn’t stop the Goblin from staring at her more.
“Have you seen me before?”
“We saw each other a few days ago. In front of the chicken shop.”
“That time and now, why do you keep calling me brother?”
“Why should I go this, that, hey, you?”
His face creased. This girl was way too different from his kind sister.
The Goblin asked Sunny, “What relationship are you in with this guy? Do you even know what this guy is?”
After quickly covering the Goblin’s mouth, the grim reaper smiled forcefully at Sunny.
“A relationship where we give each other rings?”
That was when Eun Tak realised the ‘person’ that Sunny had been waiting for all this time was the grim reaper.
“Oh, was that what the ring was for?”
“Nice question, part-timer. What was that ring for?”
The sudden question was for the grim reaper. His eyes wavered; that was what he wanted to know too. There were two things he knew so far.
One. The woman on the scroll and Sunny’s past life are identical. Two. The woman on the scroll is Shin’s sister.
Did that mean that Sunny was Shin’s sister in her past life? He wasn’t sure yet. The portrait and the scroll, the ring and Sunny; who was he in this story? Where did he come in?
“Oh, since that topic came up, could you give me back the ring? At the cafe we met before; at 4 pm.”
The grim reaper nodded; he had to figure out what that ring was, and quickly.
*
Carefully, the Goblin opened the scroll.
“How have you been…”
He touched her face lightly.
“Your brother is finally doing a little well.”
It was all because of Eun Tak, who smiled as much as Sun.
After greeting the portrait, Goblin went into the kitchen. The grim reaper was making lunch. His face was worse than yesterday; a screw seemed loose from his brain. He just wasn’t right. In fact, he was sprinkling chilli powder onto his salad. The Goblin looked at the grim reaper in disgust, as the grim reaper ruined his meal.
“Wake up; serve lunch. Did you not manage to take the ring?”
“I just borrowed it for a bit.”
“That’s taking. Why would you borrow something you gave? I saw you holding hands with her yesterday; was she your enemy or something in your past life?”
“Stop trying to get an answer from me. I’m not allowed to tell you; it’s part of the rules.”
The Goblin looked at the grim reaper, more disgusted; only if all the screws had come undone in the grim reaper’s brain. He could have figured out whether Sunny was his sister or not.
“Why are you suddenly being a goody-two shoes grim reaper? You’re a grim reaper that is hiding it’s identity from a human and meeting them.”
“Do you really have to say things like that, when we’re in the same position?”
“What do you mean by the same position? My love is destined… My sister’s name was Sun Kim too.”
The grim reaper looked at the Goblin. He hadn’t known that.
“That’s why I was a bit confused this morning.”
The Goblin sighed and picked at his food.
“I thought you didn’t know whether she was reborn or not.”
“Obviously. If she was born with a different face, I wouldn’t be able to recognize her at all. The only thing I can see is a person’s future.”
“Imagine you actually meet your reborn sister, what happens then? Your sister probably wouldn’t have the memory from her past life.”
Just imagining that his sister was reborn, made the Goblin feel happy. Although the reborn Sun wouldn't actually be Sun, he wanted to see them once.
“I don’t know. I just want to see whether she’s at peace in this life, whether she’s going to live a long life, whether she’s getting loved… She was pretty, my sister.”
“Tell me about it.”
“About what?”
“About your story. How you lived. How you died.”
Eun Tak stopped behind the kitchen doors; she had been getting ready to go out, but had heard what the two men were talking about.
“Didn’t I tell you before? That I was a general. I was Goryeo’s military official.”
“Did you die at war?”
“I died by the sword of the king I protected.”
The grim reaper had guessed that the Goblin’s death would not have been happy, but he had not known that it would have been this painful too.
“I knew I couldn’t reach him, but the only thing I could do was to walk forward. That was my last war, and I had to die there.”
“Why?”
“I had come back even though the king had ordered me not to, and I had not known how dangerous the king’s jealousy was. I couldn’t forget the late king’s request to protect Yeo, and I had to save those innocent lives. And most importantly, because my sister was protecting the stupid king with all her life.”
The grim reaper couldn’t say anything.
“I’ve talked too much, the food is getting cold.”
The Goblin tried to eat again when the grim reaper took out the jade ring. Not knowing what the grim reaper was saying, the Goblin raised an eyebrow.
“Do you really think that you’re my sister? Is that why you asked me about my past life? Try and put the ring on; let’s see what happens.”
The Goblin walked towards the grim reaper, but the grim reaper flinched back in disgust.
“Sun, are you being loved?”
The voice calling his sister was way too sweet, the grim reaper felt a shiver going up his spine. Eun Tak walked into the kitchen, apologising for breaking the sweet moment and told them she was going out for a while. The two men nodded and started fighting again.
